Dystopia: There Is No Perfect Software
Law firm owners swap into and out of software on a regular basis, including primary tools, like case management software. Now, certainly, some of that is justified, because some attorneys do a deep dive into product offerings that deliber true alternatives that represent an improvement on what they had been using. But, sometimes, attorneys switch . . . and, switch again . . . and, switch once more. And, that’s sometimes based in an assumption about software, that’s just not true.
Lots of law firms are on the hunt for ‘perfect’ software. But, that doesn’t really exist, with off-the shelf-software. There’s always going to be something you don’t like. And, I’ve got news for you: it’s not just you – software companies, too, are always looking to improve their product offerings; and, there is dissatisfaction over some feature or other, pretty much continuously. I guess everybody’s in search of perfection.
But, since softwares are constantly a work-in-progress, you should view your law firm’s use of software via the same lens. You want to continue to improve your efficient use of your tools; and, sometimes that may involve a workaround. Of course, the good news is that you can suggest improvements to the software tools you use. So, even if you’re not gonna ever have the ‘perfect’ software at your disposal, you should only move for a serious ugrade – because there are also significant costs to implementing new tools in the practice. Instead, focus on being as proficient as possible, using what you’ve got.
And, if you get really frustrated: sure, you can build your own software – but, there’s a reason most law firms don’t do that . . . because it’s expensive, and you’ll always be chasing the grail, too.
