The Rhode Island Bar Association Annual Meeting is back
in-person at the Rhode Island Convention Center on
Thursday and Friday, June 23rd and 24th!

This year, you have your choice of 33 workshops designed to increase your competency and social opportunities to reconnect with old friends and forge new relationships with colleagues. There are also opportunities to receive discounts on products and services that make your law practice run more efficiently!
 
Online registration for the Annual Meeting closes on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. If you have not registered by June 17, you must go to the walk-in registration desk. Early registration is strongly encouraged. We cannot guarantee seats, meals, or conference materials to anyone registering after the deadline. If you registering for a luncheon only, please call the office at (401) 421-5740 to complete your registration.

Thursday Morning Plenary Session
 
This year, the Thursday morning plenary speakers are the Honorable Melissa A. Long, Associate Justice of the RI Supreme Court, the Honorable Linda Rekas Sloan, Associate Justice of the RI Superior Court, the Honorable Lia N. Stuhlsatz, Associate Justice of the RI Family Court, and attorneys Hamza Chaudary and Josh Xavier. The panel will discuss the value of multi-culturalism and representation in all aspects of the legal system, including the legal workforce and Rhode Island Judiciary, and address how organizations can attract and retain employees from a broad range of backgrounds.

Our Friday afternoon plenary presentation features award-winning trial attorneys Keith and Dana Cutler, partners in the law firm of James W. Tippin & Associates in Kansas City, Missouri, and co-judges on the two-time Emmy-nominated, nationally syndicated daytime television courtroom show “Couples Court with the Cutlers.”

During our Annual Meeting Luncheon on Friday, we are honoring our colleagues for their 50 years of service in the profession, bestowing the Florence K. Murray Award, inducting Ada L. Sawyer into the RI Heritage Hall of Fame, and will hear an address by our incoming Bar Association President, Mark B. Morse. Additionally, we will have the pleasure of traditional remarks by Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul A. Suttell on the State of the Rhode Island Judiciary.

In this workshop, the speakers utilize hypotheticals drawn from various resources, glossaries, and phrasing guides to update attendees as to what language is appropriate and inclusive when addressing LGBTQ individuals or groups. The speakers also discuss an attorney's ethical and professional obligation to address people by using the labels/names/words that each person has endorsed as their own.

Foundations of Franchise Law

This workshop is an opportunity to learn about fundamentals of franchise law and receive practical tips and advice from experienced practitioners. These presenters will provide a balanced overview of franchise law with a focus on the franchise relationship. Topics will include franchise disclosure laws and issues, trademark law and common issues in franchising, vicarious liability, and disputes that arise in the franchise relationship including termination or non-renewal.
