Lawyer Referral Service, Reduced-Fee LRS, and Arts Program

The Rhode Island Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service is a vital bridge between the public and the private bar, helping individuals access legal services while offering attorneys an opportunity to grow their practice and give back to the community. The LRS covers nearly all areas of law, including limited scope representation, and connects thousands of Rhode Islanders with qualified attorneys each year.

Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)
Every year, the Rhode Island Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) receives thousands of calls from individuals seeking help finding the right attorney. By joining the LRS, you can both build your client base and help ensure that the public is connected with qualified, experienced attorneys in the legal areas they need most.

The LRS connects potential clients with participating attorneys based on geographic location and practice area. Referrals are made on a rotating basis, giving you the opportunity to receive steady exposure and grow your practice.

Why Join LRS?

Visibility: Get your name in front of thousands of potential clients through our well-established referral network.
Credibility: Your participation reflects a commitment to public service and access to justice.
Opportunities: Many LRS attorneys are invited to take part in legal clinics and “Ask-a-Lawyer” events—expanding your reach while giving back to the community.
When a referred client retains you, a 10% remittance is paid to the LRS on any legal fee over $500 (exclusive of costs). The first $500 is excluded from the calculation.

Optional Public Service-Oriented LRS Programs
As an LRS member, you can choose to participate in specialized programs that provide legal access to underrepresented communities while continuing to build your practice:

Reduced-Fee Program
This program serves clients with limited means who cannot afford standard legal fees. Participating attorneys agree to:

Charge no more than $100 per hour
Cap initial retainers at $500

Attorneys offering services under the Reduced-Fee Program are exempt from the 10% LRS remittance fee.

Legal Information and Referral Service for the Elderly
This initiative helps Rhode Islanders aged 60 and older by offering regular, reduced, or pro bono fee arrangements depending on their financial situation.

Lawyers for the Arts
A component of the LRS, Lawyers for the Arts connects artists and arts-related organizations with legal professionals offering:

Regular fee services
Reduced fee services
Pro bono assistance (based on income eligibility)
