Summary

Speaker Heidi Alexander, Esq., Executive Director of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being

Description: The legal profession is facing a well-being crisis, with lawyers reporting all-time high levels of burnout, many of whom are considering leaving the profession altogether. Additionally, rates of mental health concerns and suicide are higher than the general population, and when left unaddressed and unmanaged impact lawyers’ ability to fulfill their professional duties. As the late Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph Gants stated, “The health of our legal system depends on the health of the legal profession, and the health of the profession depends on the health of our lawyers.” This program will explore both systemic and individual solutions to promote well-being, set boundaries, and foster a sustainable legal culture that prioritizes civility, inclusion, and balance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the latest research on lawyer burnout, mental health, and substance use.

  • Recognize the impact of technology, constant connectivity, and the pressure to always be available.

  • Learn practical strategies for setting boundaries, managing stress, and integrating work-life balance.

  • Explore ways to foster civility, inclusion, and create community within the legal profession.

  • Examine national and local efforts to create healthier, more sustainable legal workplaces.
