Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee - Free, One-Ethics Credit, Virtual Committee CLE Seminar

The Rhode Island Bar Association’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee is sponsoring a free-to-Bar-members, one-Ethics credit Committee CLE seminar on Tuesday, May 6th, from 12:30-1:30 PM, via Zoom.

Titled "Alcohol Use and Health Risks in the Legal Profession," this session will be presented by J.E. Buddy Stockwell, JD, Executive Director of the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program. Research shows that as many as one in five lawyers struggle with problem drinking–twice the national rate. While it’s uncertain why lawyers experience alcohol use disorders at a higher rate, it is clear that alcoholism has devastating effects on a lawyer’s career and personal life. A new advisory from the United States Surgeon General demonstrates that alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable cancer and that drinking even as little as one drink a day increases the risk of cancer by 19% in women and 11.4% in men. This presentation will provide an overview and update of the legal profession and substance use as well as provide support and resources.
