Save the Date! The RIBA Annual Meeting is Scheduled for June 23 and 24, 2022.

Dear Colleagues:

Save the date! The Rhode Island Bar Association Annual Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The meeting will provide attendees with outstanding opportunities to learn, improve your practice, socialize with your colleagues, and fulfill annual CLE requirements with 32 seminars on a variety of pertinent legal topics.

This year, the Thursday morning plenary speakers are the Honorable Melissa A. Long, Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the Honorable Linda Rekas Sloan, Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court, the Honorable Lia N. Stuhlsatz, Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Family Court, and attorneys Hamza Chaudary and Josh Xavier. The panel will discuss the value of multi-culturalism and representation in all aspects of the legal system, including the legal workforce and Rhode Island Judiciary, and will address how organizations can attract and retain employees from a broad range of backgrounds.

Our Friday afternoon plenary presentation features award-winning trial attorneys Keith and Dana Cutler, partners in the law firm of James W. Tippin & Associates in Kansas City, Missouri, and co-judges on the two-time Emmy-nominated, nationally syndicated daytime television courtroom show “Couples Court with the Cutlers.” Their program will discuss some of the things that can get in the way of Authentic Inclusiveness, like micro-aggressions, implicit bias, and good intentions gone bad. Keith and Dana will keep it authentic and entertaining as they help us all navigate diversity and inclusiveness.

In addition to the always popular Civil & Criminal Case Law, Family Case Law, Estate Planning Trusts & Commercial Law Update programs, we have a great lineup of fantastic workshops including:

·     2022 Estate Planning for Rhode Island Residents and Florida Snowbirds

·     Practical Guidance on the 2021 Rhode Island Pay Equity Law

·     The Britney Effect: Protect Decision-Making Rights with Supported Decision-Making, a New Alternative to Guardianship in RI

·     Rhode Island Mechanic’s Lien Law: Procedure and Process

·     Medicaid Crisis Planning

·     Eliminating Bias from Your Writing

·     Foreclosure Post-Pandemic

·     RI Real Estate Title Standards and Real Estate Conveyances

·     And more!

Don’t forget to join us Thursday evening for our Annual Awards Reception where Bar award winners are lauded for outstanding achievements, and on Friday for the Annual Meeting Luncheon when the Bar honors members who have achieved 50 years of service in the profession and bestows the Florence K. Murray Award. The Luncheon will also feature the induction of Ada L. Sawyer, the first woman to pass the Bar in Rhode Island, into the RI Heritage Hall of Fame, an address on the State of the Rhode Island Judiciary, delivered by Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul A. Suttell, and the Bar will welcome incoming Rhode Island Bar Association President Mark B. Morse.

I am looking forward to the face-to-face moments with old friends, colleagues, and members of the judiciary that we have taken for granted and missed for so long due to the pandemic. This is not an event to be missed! We’ll also be recording several of our programs and offering them through the Bar’s on-demand catalog. More information regarding how to register will be disseminated to members next month.

Sincerely,

Lynda L. Laing

President
