Pursuant to the by-laws of the Rhode Island Legal Services, Inc. (RILS) and the Legal Services Corporation Act, the Rhode Island Bar Association may appoint attorneys to the Board of Directors of Rhode Island Legal Services, Inc. Terms are for three years, and there are currently two vacancies. RILS is happy to have attorneys who have an interest in and knowledge of the delivery of legal services to the poor. Please note that 45 CFR Section 1607.3(3) states that appointments shall be made as to ensure that the attorney members reasonably reflect the diversity of the legal community and the population of the areas served by the agency, including race, ethnicity, gender, and other similar factors.

If you are interested in being nominated for a position on the Board of RI Legal Services, please send a letter of interest by Wednesday, January 27th to: RI Bar Association, Attn: Richard P. D'Addario, President, 41 Sharpe Drive, Cranston, RI 02920 or email your interest to hmcdonald@ribar.com.

The second session in the new, FREE, non-credit, technology program series, Compare & Contrast: VoIP Phone Systems, is scheduled for Thursday, February 4th at 12:30 pm. In this session, Jared Correia of Red Cave Law Firm Consulting and Attorney Mike Goldberg, co-chair of the Bar’s Technology in the Practice Committee, will review three top VoIP phone system providers, and take questions on the subject.

As more and more law firms adopt/are forced to adopt distributed work environments, limitations of traditional phone systems are being felt. So, as with other technology choices, law firms are beginning to adopt VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phone systems, which offer the flexibility and cost savings of other cloud-software. These systems allow attorneys and staff to make and take phone calls via any internet-ready device; plus, these systems offer a number of other useful features.

This quick (30 minute) and free presentation will get you the information you need to make an informed choice. Please click here to register for the program via Zoom.

As a reminder, this series will review different law-related products and services and each webinar will be focused on a certain topic. In just 30 minutes, Jared will discuss what makes the most sense for members depending on practice size and budget. All sessions will be recorded and available to view free of charge on the Bar’s Law Practice Management page on ribar.com.

It has come to our attention that spam emails, purportedly sent from Richard D'Addario, Bar President, have been circulated to several members of the Bar. If you receive an email from Mr. D'Addario or other members of the Bar that you were not expecting and which come from a strange email address, please do not respond to the email or click on any links; delete the email immediately. The scams work by impersonation of a well-known name within an organization or even by using the names of colleagues.

The recent scam emails ask the person receiving the email if they are "free at the moment." When the receiver responds, the scammer asks the receiver to procure several gift cards for the sender as a favor. Please be advised that the president of the Bar Association would never send emails of this nature to members.

If you ever receive an email from someone you were not expecting and they ask you to perform a suspicious act or click a link, it is always a good idea to err on the side of caution and delete the email immediately.
