Safe Zone Training: Competently and Ethically Communicating with LGBTQ+ Clients
Additional Information:
Attorneys have an ethical obligation not to discriminate against others based on their sexuality or gender identity, and all clients deserve to feel safe with the attorney who is their representative.

One aspect that often stands in the way of productive attorney/client relationships is poor communication. Attorneys need to be able to communicate opening with their clients in order to be effective representatives, but may not always know the dos and don’ts of supporting their LGBTQ+ client, many may feel uncomfortable with not knowing respectful or correct language and terminology. Many Attorneys may even be unaware of what specific LGBTQ+ concerns they should be addressing when engaging a client. In addition to clients, attorneys in your organizations who are members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve to feel safe, welcomed, and supported by their colleagues in the same manner as your clients do.

This training will be an introduction to how to communicate with your current and future LGBTQ+ clients and colleagues in a responsibly, respectfully, and ethical manner. This will also be an opportunity to ask direct questions that you might feel uncomfortable asking an LGBTQ+ client or colleague directly. The CLE Committee would like to thank the LGBT Committee for their assistance in coordinating this CLE.
