The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit acts as the State’s attorney. The Consumer Protection Unit cannot represent individuals in the court of law; yet, the Consumer Protection Unit does mediate between the consumer and the business in an attempt to resolve any difficulties and/or misunderstandings. The Consumer Protection Unit follows the guidelines of the RILG 6-13.0-1 Deceptive Trade Practices, along with the other statutes that offer protection to consumers.

Rhode Island Legal Services, Inc. (RILS) is a nonprofit law firm representing clients in matters involving public benefits, health, welfare, landlord-tenant, family law, domestic violence, education, consumer, tax and employment law matters. RILS is the major provider of free civil legal assistance to low-income clients in the State of Rhode Island. The agency is a client centered program that seeks to expand its outreach through a collaborative approach to building a "justice community". The agency concentrates on the types of cases that tend to stabilize the family unit in a safe environment. The services provided may range from advice and counsel to direct representation in complex litigation.

The Roger Williams Univ. Criminal Defense clinic represents low-income defendants in misdemeanor criminal cases and in certain cases pending before the RI Traffic Tribunal. May also handle parole revocation hearings.

The Roger Williams University Disability Law clinic represents low-income clients in a variety of disability cases, such as SSI/SSDI appeals, educational IEP’s and federal appeals. May also handle family law issues pertaining to disability related matters.
 
 
RI Bar Association Volunteer Lawyer Program

This program provides legal assistance to low income clients who cannot obtain legal representation either on their own or through other existing agencies.
 
 
RI Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service and Reduced Fee Program

RI Disability Law Center, Inc.

RIDLC provides free legal assistance to persons with disabilities. Services include individual representation to protect rights or secure benefits and services, self –help information; educational programs; and administrative and legislative advocacy. The agency administers eight federally funded programs.
