The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit acts as the State’s attorney. The Consumer Protection Unit cannot represent individuals in the court of law; yet, the Consumer Protection Unit does mediate between the consumer and the business in an attempt to resolve any difficulties and/or misunderstandings. The Consumer Protection Unit follows the guidelines of the RILG 6-13.0-1 Deceptive Trade Practices, along with the other statutes that offer protection to consumers.

Rhode Island Legal Services, Inc. (RILS) is a nonprofit law firm representing clients in matters involving public benefits, health, welfare, landlord-tenant, family law, domestic violence, education, consumer, tax and employment law matters. RILS is the major provider of free civil legal assistance to low-income clients in the State of Rhode Island. The agency is a client centered program that seeks to expand its outreach through a collaborative approach to building a "justice community". The agency concentrates on the types of cases that tend to stabilize the family unit in a safe environment. The services provided may range from advice and counsel to direct representation in complex litigation.
