The Office is a legal office that advocates for particular children whose legal, civil, and special rights in the DCYF system and/or Family Court proceedings are not being met. Special attention is given to children in care who are not entitled to appointed counsel, primarily voluntary admittees, and to children, who though represented in Family Court, need legal assistance in collateral matters such as public benefits, education, mental health and employment. In addition the office advocates for a group of individuals as an identifiable class when system changes for an entire class is necessary.

The office of the Mental Health Advocate provides legal assistance to people with chronic serious mental illness. We help people get out of or into psychiatric care. We also go to court to preserve housing and protect the civil rights of people with mental illness.

We use volunteer mediators to provide free or low cost mediation for small claims, neighborhood merchant/consumer and family disputes. We help people resolve their problems without going to court. The mediators do not represent either party, they help parties get together to jointly work out a solution.

The Homeless Legal Clinic was established in an effort to address the legal need of homeless people in RI. Legal clinics are currently held in six shelters statewide. Attorneys visit the shelters on a bi-weekly basis.
